The territory

Once a fief of the archbishops of Milan, the municipality of Mercallo is now in a particularly strategic position in the Varese area.

Located a few minutes walk from Lake Comabbio, just 5 minutes by car from the bathing lake of Monate, 20 minutes from Lake Maggiore, 30 from Varese and less than an hour from Milan.

Mercallo is a historic town surrounded by greenery, and surrounded by parks, lakes, rivers, small suggestive villages, museums and many other curiosities, Mercallo is today a site of cultural interest of the SIC, as well as the perfect gateway to this land which, with its 1199km2 of extension, is just waiting to be explored.

A ride between the lakes

Mercallo, and with it the Aquasole Estate, is located in the center of one of the most suggestive cycle paths in Northern Italy: the ring of lakes that connects Comabbio and Varese.

34% of the Varese area is designated as a protected area, and following this route you can circumnavigate the two lakes of the same name, linked together by the Brabbia Swamp, with stretches immersed in the woods and numerous rest points from which to enjoy the spectacular sunset panorama.

A trip to Varese

A few minutes drive from Mercallo you will find the city of Varese, also known as the “Garden City” for the beautiful villas that the aristocracy of the time had built there between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, in search of a reserved and surrounded by greenery in which to seek rest. The wonderful Villa Panza is famous, surrounded by a perfect example of an Italian garden.

Climb the Sacro Monte

Unesco World Heritage Site, the Sacro Monte site is just half an hour’s drive from Mercallo, in the Campo dei Fiori Regional Natural Park.

Of this place Stendhal wrote, in 1817: “Magnificent vision! At sunset you could see seven lakes. Believe me, you can travel all over France and Germany, but you will never experience similar sensations”.

Go up the Via Sacra, famous for its 14 Chapels, until you reach the village of Santa Maria del Monte, with its Sanctuary, the Pogliaghi Museum, the Baroffio Museum, the Romite Ambrosiane Monastery and its picturesque bars and restaurants overlooking the Valley.

The magic of Lake Maggiore

If you are in Mercallo you cannot miss the beauties of Lake Maggiore: the second largest lake in Italy, which marks a natural border with Switzerland and Piedmont.

Waiting for you will find the enchanting Isola Bella, full of botanical gardens; Isola dei Pescatori, inhabited all year round; the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso (a famous monastery overlooking the lake) and Stresa, famous for its spectacular villas and romantic walks.
